A ug 1 99 7 Implications of a constant observed braking index for young pulsar ’ s spindown

چکیده
The observed braking index n obs which had been determined for a few young pulsars, had been found to differ from the expected value for a rotating magnetic dipole model. In addition, the observational jerk parameter, determined for two of these pulsars, disagrees with the theoretical prediction m obs = 15 in both cases. We propose a simple model able to account for these differences, based on a growth of the " torque function " K = − ˙ Ω/Ω n , under the constraint that n obs is a constant. We show that there is observational evidence supporting the latter hypotesis, and derive initial values for several physical quantities for the four pulsars whose n obs have been measured.

Accretion-Assisted Spindown of Young Radio Pulsars
We present a model for the spindown of young radio pulsars in which the neutron star loses rotational energy not only by emitting magnetic dipole radiation but also by torquing a surrounding accretion disk produced by supernova fallback. The braking index predicted in our model is in general less than n = 3 (the value for pure dipole magnetic radiation), in agreement with the reported values of...

We have detected significant X-ray emission from the direction of the young radio pulsar PSR J1105−6107 using the ASCA Observatory. The 11σ detection includes 460 background-subtracted source counts derived using data from all four ASCA detectors. The emission shows no evidence of pulsations; the pulsed fraction is less than 31%, at the 90% confidence level. The X-ray emission can be characteri...
متن کاملA High Braking Index for a Pulsar
We present a phase-coherent timing solution for PSR J1640–4631, a young 206 ms pulsar using X-ray timing observations taken with NuSTAR. Over this timing campaign, we have measured the braking index of PSR J1640–4631 to be n = 3.15± 0.03. Using a series of simulations, we argue that this unusually high braking index is not due to timing noise, but is intrinsic to the pulsar’s spin-down. We cann...
